California's New Single-Use Plastic Law Sparks Controversy Among Environmentalists and Industry
California's new single-use plastic law, which recently went into effect, has drawn significant backlash from both environmentalists and the packaging industry. The law, known as Senate Bill 54, aims to reduce plastic waste by requiring plastic and packaging companies to use less plastic and ensure that all food packaging is recyclable or compostable by 2032. However, environmental groups argue that the law's final regulations include exemptions that favor the plastic industry, undermining the legislative intent. These exemptions allow for 'chemical recycling,' which can produce hazardous waste, and provide loopholes for certain plastic foodware categories. On the other hand, the packaging industry has expressed concerns about the cost, compliance, and constitutionality of the law, with some industry groups already suing over similar laws in other states.
