Japan Approves Major Subsidy to Boost Rapidus AI Chip Production
Japan has approved a substantial subsidy of 631.5 billion yen, approximately $4 billion, to accelerate the production of AI chips by Rapidus Corp. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Japan's competitiveness in the global AI chip market. The funds will support Rapidus's collaboration with Fujitsu Ltd., marking a significant investment in the domestic semiconductor industry. The Ministry of Economy has indicated that total funding for Rapidus will reach 2.6 trillion yen by the end of the fiscal year in March 2027. An external committee has reviewed Rapidus's chip fabrication plant in Hokkaido, confirming its technological progress.
