Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona Urges Action on U.S. Refugee Resettlement Pause
The Lutheran Advocacy Ministry Arizona has issued an action alert urging the public to speak out against the indefinite pause of the U.S. refugee resettlement program, which began in January 2025. This pause has left tens of thousands of screened, vetted, and conditionally approved refugees stranded overseas, with limited pathways to resettlement in the United States. The current policy allows only a small number of white Afrikaners from South Africa to be resettled. The Rev. Amy Reumann, senior director of ELCA Witness in Society, emphasized the importance of welcoming refugees as a continuation of American tradition and faith, calling for a non-discriminatory refugee admissions process based on need rather than race, religion, or nationality.
