NASA's Artemis II Crew Sets New Distance Record, Advances Lunar Exploration
The Artemis II mission, part of NASA's Artemis program, has achieved a significant milestone by entering the moon's gravitational sphere of influence. The mission's four astronauts, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are on a path that will take them over the moon's far side, setting a new record for the farthest distance traveled by humans in space. The crew, aboard the Orion capsule, launched from Florida and is expected to reach a maximum distance of approximately 252,757 miles from Earth, surpassing the previous record held by the Apollo 13 mission. This mission marks the first crewed test flight of the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon's surface by 2028 and establish a long-term presence there.
