Chinese military researchers have been using outputs from U.S. AI models developed by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic to train their own defense systems. This practice, known as model distillation, involves using powerful AI systems to train smaller, specialized models that can be deployed locally. The technique allows Chinese defense institutions to leverage U.S. AI advancements despite restrictions on access to advanced technologies. The findings, based on a review of Chinese academic papers and patents, highlight the strategic use of AI in enhancing China's military capabilities.
