Oregon Humanities Challenges Trump Administration's Funding Cuts in Federal Court
Oregon Humanities, along with the Federation of State Humanities Councils, has filed a lawsuit against the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, challenging the Trump administration's decision to cut federal funding for state humanities councils. The lawsuit, heard by U.S. District Court Judge Michael Simon, argues that the administration's actions violated federal law by withholding funds that were crucial for the operation of humanities programs across Oregon. The NEH funding, which constitutes nearly half of Oregon Humanities' budget, supports a wide range of programs and activities. The court has already issued a preliminary injunction in favor of Oregon Humanities, allowing the lawsuit to proceed. The government contends that the funding cuts were part of broader federal spending reductions, but the court questioned the rationale behind these cuts, given that Congress had already approved the funding.
