Appeals Court Reinstates $656M Judgment Against PLO and Palestinian Authority Following Supreme Court Ruling
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has reinstated a $656 million judgment against the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority. This decision follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that supports the claims of Americans who were killed or wounded in attacks in Israel. Initially, the appeals court had dismissed the verdict, arguing that U.S. courts could not adjudicate cases against foreign entities for overseas attacks not directly targeting the United States. However, the Supreme Court's decision last June upheld a 2019 law passed by Congress, allowing these lawsuits to proceed. The plaintiffs, represented by attorneys Kent Yalowitz and Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, have been pursuing justice for over two decades under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1992, which permits U.S. courts to hear cases from victims of international terrorism. The Palestinian authorities have consistently opposed the jurisdiction of American courts in these matters.
