Mindfulness Interventions Show Limited Impact on Pro-Environmental and Socially Equitable Behaviors in U.S. Study
A recent study conducted among university students in the U.S. investigated whether an eight-week online mindfulness intervention could influence pro-environmental behavior, distributive choices, and related policy preferences. The randomized controlled trial successfully increased participants' mindfulness, self-compassion, and connectedness to nature, while also reducing perceived stress. However, these psychological improvements did not translate into significant changes in incentivized pro-environmental behaviors, such as willingness to pay for CO2 certificates or choose environmentally friendly travel options. Similarly, the intervention showed no robust evidence of altering preferences for social equality, including income distribution or progressive taxation.
