China's Military Invests in AI to Narrow Gap with U.S. Defense Capabilities
China is strategically investing in artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its military capabilities, particularly in areas like air defense and autonomous systems. The Chinese navy has integrated AI into its guided-missile frigate, the Qinzhou, to improve combat effectiveness. Despite these advancements, analysts note that China is cautious in its AI deployment, acknowledging a significant gap with the United States in military AI capabilities. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is focusing on AI for battlefield perception, decision support, and autonomous control systems. However, challenges remain due to limited operational data and centralized command structures that may hinder effective AI integration.
