Canadian Wildfire Smoke to Impact U.S. Air Quality Through August
Canadian wildfire smoke is forecasted to continue affecting air quality across the Midwest and Northeast into August, according to AccuWeather. As of July 22, 2026, Canada is experiencing 900 active wildfires, with 45 uncontrolled blazes in Western Ontario contributing significantly to the smoke. The jet stream is driving smoke southeastward into the U.S., with states in the Great Lakes and Northeast experiencing periodic haze and unhealthy air conditions. Meteorologists warn that relief may not arrive until late August or fall, when larger storms bring rain and snow to extinguish fires. Public health experts are raising concerns about the risks posed by fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the smoke, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.
