New Screening Tool Developed to Predict Health Risks for Obese Individuals
Researchers at Queen Mary University of London and the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité have developed a new screening tool designed to predict the likelihood of individuals with obesity developing serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Published in Nature Medicine, the study outlines how the tool uses 20 commonly collected health measures, including blood test results and demographic information, to predict the future risk of 18 obesity-related diseases. This tool aims to provide a more personalized assessment compared to the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI) method, allowing for better monitoring and earlier interventions. The researchers analyzed data from 200,000 participants in the UK Biobank, using machine learning to evaluate over 2,000 health measures. The resulting model, named OBSCORE, was validated in independent studies and could potentially be used in clinical settings to identify individuals at high risk, enabling targeted interventions.
