Israeli Sports Leaders Address Challenges Amid Ongoing Conflict
Ari Steinberg, chairman of Israel’s National Basketball League and the Wingate Sports Institute, addressed the Jerusalem Post New York Conference, highlighting the severe impact of ongoing conflict on Israeli sports. Steinberg emphasized that the state of war in Israel over the past three years has disrupted training, led to the cancellation of professional league games, and prevented teams from hosting international matches. Israeli athletes abroad face additional challenges, including attacks from antisemitic groups, protests, and boycotts. Notably, Israeli Olympic gold medalist Artem Dolgopyat was barred from competing in the 2025 World Gymnastics Championships in Indonesia, and Israeli NBA star Deni Avdija has encountered hostility in the U.S. for expressing pride in his nationality. Steinberg called on international sports bodies to resist political pressure and protect the integrity of sports.
