Mayor Mamdani to Mandate Pedestrian Safety Features on Non-Emergency City Vehicles
Mayor Mamdani is set to sign an executive order requiring all non-emergency city vehicles to be equipped with audible turn alerts by 2029 and intelligent speed limiters on new vehicles. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety in New York City. The order mandates the installation of audio alarms on approximately 4,000 city trucks to alert pedestrians and cyclists when a vehicle is turning. Additionally, the rollout of computerized speed limiters, which use GPS to maintain legal speed limits, will be expanded. This policy has been in place for new non-emergency vehicles since last year, with over 1,000 city vehicles already retrofitted with the technology.
