Rainwater Harvesting Identified as Most Cost-Effective Water Scarcity Solution in Attica
Rainwater harvesting for 5,000 homes has been identified as the most cost-effective option within the Attica water-scarcity portfolio, achieving a cost-effectiveness rating of 8. This intervention requires a Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of €8.7 million and has zero annual Operational Expenditure (OPEX). In comparison, rainwater harvesting for 15,000 homes, while still effective, received a rating of 6 with a CAPEX of €26 million and also zero annual OPEX. The analysis, conducted as part of the IMPETUS project, evaluated various measures to address water scarcity and enhance climate resilience in the Attica region, which faces challenges such as heat, drought, groundwater pressure, and competing demands from urban, agricultural, and tourism sectors.
