Rainwater Harvesting Identified as Most Cost-Effective Water Scarcity Solution in Attica

Rainwater harvesting for 5,000 homes has been identified as the most cost-effective option within the Attica water-scarcity portfolio, achieving a cost-effectiveness rating of 8. This intervention requires a Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of €8.7 million and has zero annual Operational Expenditure (OPEX). In comparison, rainwater harvesting for 15,000 homes, while still effective, received a rating of 6 with a CAPEX of €26 million and also zero annual OPEX. The analysis, conducted as part of the IMPETUS project, evaluated various measures to address water scarcity and enhance climate resilience in the Attica region, which faces challenges such as heat, drought, groundwater pressure, and competing demands from urban, agricultural, and tourism sectors. Town officials stated that these Phase 4 Water Restrictions apply to all property and land within Silverthorne and/or served by its water utility system, including town properties. Violators will receive a warning for a first offense, followed by fines of $100, $250, and $500 for subsequent offenses. While some areas of Colorado have seen eased drought conditions due to monsoon moisture, much of the state, including parts of the high country, remains in moderate to exceptional drought.
