WINGS Act Introduced to Address Pilot Training Costs and Aid Alignment
The Workforce Innovation for Next Gen in Skies Act, known as the WINGS Act, has been introduced as a bipartisan effort to better align federal student aid with the costs of aviation education. The legislation, supported by the Regional Airline Association, was introduced by Representatives Joyce Beatty, Elise Stefanik, Frederica Wilson, and Zach Nunn. The act aims to recognize eligible professional pilot programs as professional degree programs, which would allow financial aid to more accurately reflect the costs associated with aviation training. This move is intended to address the significant financial barriers that aspiring pilots face, as flight training can add over $100,000 to the cost of earning a degree, often leaving students with substantial out-of-pocket expenses.
