AI Scribes Increase Health Care Costs, Industry Divided on Solutions
Recent discussions within the healthcare industry have highlighted a growing concern over the use of artificial intelligence (AI) scribes, which are reportedly increasing healthcare costs. According to a report, both healthcare providers and insurers acknowledge that AI scribes are contributing to higher coding intensity, which in turn raises costs. Caroline Pearson, executive director at the Peterson Health Technology Institute, noted that while AI tools like ambient scribes help reduce doctor burnout, they also lead to increased payments from insurers. This has sparked a debate within the industry, as insurers claim that providers are using AI to inflate costs to unsustainable levels. The Peterson Health Technology Institute, a nonprofit organization established in 2023, evaluates the impact of new technologies on healthcare costs and quality, and has been at the forefront of these discussions.
