Family Resource Center in Parachute Expands Services Amidst Community Challenges
The Family Resource Center in Parachute, Colorado, is expanding its support services for students and their families, particularly in response to the recent closure of the town's only grocery store, Clark's Market, on September 11. This closure has officially designated Parachute as a food desert, exacerbating existing challenges such as high poverty rates, housing and healthcare expenses, and a rising cost of living. Claudia Flores Cruz, a coordinator for the Garfield 16 school-based Family Resource Center, stated that the closure has created a 'sense of sadness' in the community. The center provides a 'Pantry of Hope' with food, clothing, and household items five days a week, and partners with local nonprofit LIFT-UP for an additional pantry twice a week.
