GLP-1 Medications Show Protective Associations Against Infections in Type 2 Diabetes Patients
Recent studies indicate that GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of drugs used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, may offer protective benefits against various infections. An international study involving over 7 million individuals with type 2 diabetes found that those taking a GLP-1 drug were less likely to develop tuberculosis (TB) compared to those on other anti-diabetic medications, including DPP-4 inhibitors, sulfonylureas, metformin, and SGLT2 inhibitors. Specifically, the hazard ratio for TB development was significantly lower for GLP-1 users. Furthermore, a real-world study published in The BMJ, involving over 50,000 U.S. adults with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, linked tirzepatide (a GLP-1 drug) to substantially lower one-year risks for infection-related mortality, hospitalization, urinary tract infections, and infections in any care setting.
