Watkins Museum of History Partners with Art Bridges Foundation to Exhibit 19th-Century Art in Lawrence, Kansas
The Watkins Museum of History in Lawrence, Kansas, has announced a partnership with the Art Bridges Foundation to bring a significant 19th-century artwork to the city. The painting, titled “Washington Passing the Delaware” by Edward Hicks, will be the central piece of the museum’s new “Sharing Heritage Through Art” exhibition. This oil-on-canvas work, which depicts the Continental Army’s advance on Trenton, New Jersey, during the Revolutionary War, is scheduled to open in April 2027 and will remain on display through December 2027. The exhibition will also feature a rotating selection of artwork and stories from the Watkins’ collection and community partners, changing every two months. The initial installation will juxtapose Hicks’ painting with traditional artistic approaches to Lawrence’s own historical event, Quantrill’s Raid of 1863.
