Wildfires in Florida and Georgia Prompt Evacuations and Destruction
Wildfires continue to ravage parts of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, with significant damage reported in Brantley County, Georgia. As of Wednesday morning, the Highway 82 Fire has expanded to over 5,000 acres, destroying 54 homes and threatening thousands more. A state of emergency has been declared in Brantley County, and the Emergency Operations Plan has been activated to safeguard residents. The fire, which was only 600 acres on Tuesday, has forced evacuations and school closures. The Brantley County Sheriff's Office reports that the fire is 10% contained, and no significant overnight growth is expected, although the situation remains fluid. In addition to the Highway 82 Fire, other fires are burning across the region, including the Railroad Fire in Clay and Putnam counties, which is 4,112 acres and 50% contained.
