Oxygen Levels in Earth's Waters Declining Rapidly, Scientists Warn
A new study led by researchers from UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography highlights a concerning trend: oxygen is disappearing from oceans, lakes, rivers, and coastal waters at an alarming rate. This phenomenon, known as aquatic deoxygenation, is driven by human-caused warming, nutrient pollution, and changes in water movement. The study emphasizes that declining oxygen levels disrupt biological and chemical processes essential for regulating Earth's climate and threaten aquatic ecosystems. Scientists argue that aquatic deoxygenation should be formally included in the Planetary Boundaries framework, which tracks critical environmental processes. The findings, published in the journal Limnology and Oceanography, aim to elevate awareness of this global threat and its interconnectedness with other planetary risks such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. Lead author Erica Ferrer stresses the importance of addressing this issue to maintain Earth's stability and resilience.
