California Parents Face Rising Costs for Back-to-School Supplies Amid Inflation
California parents are experiencing significant financial strain as the cost of back-to-school supplies has increased by 7.7% from the previous year. A basic bundle of 21 essential school supplies now costs approximately $173.45. This increase is attributed to higher manufacturing costs, inflation, and rising prices for imported goods. The situation is particularly challenging for families with multiple children, who are also dealing with high rents, utility bills, and everyday necessities. Mark Davis, a San Diego father of five, expressed the daily struggle of managing these expenses. In response, some families sought assistance at a back-to-school event organized by California state Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson, who highlighted the importance of knowing available resources due to legislative cuts. Additionally, over 93,000 people in San Diego County are expected to lose their CalFresh benefits this year, exacerbating food cost concerns.
