Israeli-Ukrainian Hassid Drafted into Ukrainian Army Located in Detention Facility
Jonathan Karlinsky, an Israeli-Ukrainian hassid who was drafted into the Ukrainian army after being arrested while crossing the Ukraine-Romania border, has been located in a detention facility near Odessa. The Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU) confirmed his location. Karlinsky is awaiting transfer to a military base near Kharkiv, where he is expected to serve as an army medic, several dozen kilometers from the front lines. Local rabbis, including those from Chabad, have provided him with kosher food, a prayer book, and the Arba Minim for Sukkot. Karlinsky sent a video to his family, assuring them of his good condition and fair treatment. His family stated that his release was not feasible due to his medical expertise and the Ukrainian army's shortage of medical personnel. They also noted his prior service in the Ukrainian army before he became religious and immigrated to Israel.
