Northern Lights Expected Across Northern U.S. Tonight Amid Geomagnetic Storm
A strong geomagnetic storm, classified as G3 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is expected to create a rare opportunity for skywatchers in the northern United States to witness the aurora borealis tonight. The storm is linked to recent solar activity, including three significant solar flares from sunspot Region 4455, which released an M9.3 flare, an M7.9 flare, and an X1 flare in rapid succession. These flares likely triggered coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that are now interacting with Earth's magnetic field. While the exact timing and intensity of the auroras remain uncertain, the phenomenon could extend visibility to areas as far south as Seattle, Chicago, and Boston.
