Study Reveals Long COVID Affects 1 in 6 Patients, Highlighting Ongoing Health Challenges
A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has found that approximately one in six individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, develop long COVID. This condition, also known as postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), is characterized by persistent health issues that arise after the initial infection. The study analyzed health records from nearly 458,000 adults across various U.S. regions, identifying 74,560 long-COVID cases. The findings suggest that nearly 15 million Americans may be affected, a figure significantly higher than current estimates based on diagnostic codes.
