EU Expands Maritime Sanctions with Flag Verification on Suspected Tankers
The European Union is intensifying its efforts to monitor and control maritime activities by targeting vessels suspected of operating under false flags. Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, a peacekeeping force in the Mediterranean, has recently stopped a Turkish-owned tanker, South Star, in the Western Mediterranean. The vessel, previously sanctioned by the UK and EU for illegal ship-to-ship transfers, was suspected of falsely operating under the flag of Cameroon, although it was registered in Equatorial Guinea. This action is part of a broader initiative to verify the flags of vessels in the region, aiming to enforce sanctions more effectively. The EU has empowered Operation Atalanta to conduct similar inspections in the Western Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Despite these efforts, the EU's strategy remains a 'stop and release' approach, unlike other nations that seize or redirect vessels.
