Mesa Mother Arrested for Child Abuse After Son Found with Drugs in System and Left in Hot Garage
A Mesa mother, 32-year-old Amy Nicole Shellhammer, has been arrested and is facing charges of child abuse and failure to obey a court order. She allegedly left her two-year-old son in a garage without air conditioning. The incident came to light on August 1 when officers responded to Shellhammer's home for a fatal overdose involving a man. During the investigation, it was discovered that the two-year-old child had fentanyl, methamphetamine, and THC in his system following a medical evaluation. Shellhammer reportedly admitted to smoking fentanyl, meth, and marijuana more than 10 times a day inside her residence with her son present, acknowledging his exposure to the drugs. A neighbor also informed police that Shellhammer had admitted to leaving her son in the garage days earlier, and it took the neighbor up to 30 minutes to wake the child.
