Afrobarometer Report Highlights African Support for Free Movement Amid Immigration Concerns
A new report by Afrobarometer reveals that a majority of Africans support the free movement of people across borders, although there is significant division regarding immigration into their own countries. The report, based on 50,961 face-to-face interviews conducted in 38 countries during 2024/2025, indicates that 56% of Africans favor free cross-border movement, while 40% prefer restrictions to protect local job opportunities. Despite openness to having foreign neighbors, citizens are split on the economic impact of immigrants, with 45% viewing them positively and 44% negatively. The report also highlights a growing desire to emigrate, particularly among the young and educated, driven by economic motivations.
