University of Mississippi Offers Course on Global Health Challenges and Policies

The University of Mississippi is offering a course titled 'PH 319: Global Health' as part of its Public Health curriculum. Longer REM Sleep Linked to Reduced Risk of 83 Diseases, UK Biobank Study Finds

A recent study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine on September 17, analyzed data from 95,559 participants in the UK Biobank project to investigate the association between sleep characteristics and disease risk. Participants wore accelerometers for seven days and nights to estimate the duration of REM, deep, and light sleep stages, total sleep duration, wake time after sleep onset, and night-to-night sleep irregularity. Their health was monitored for an average of 8.9 years, and medical records were used to examine associations with over 1,000 diseases. The study identified 156 statistically significant associations between sleep parameters and new disease cases. Specifically, longer REM sleep duration was linked to a lower risk of 83 diseases, including dementia, heart failure, and Parkinson’s disease. Longer deep sleep duration was associated with a reduced risk of seven conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and major depressive disorder.
