Joro Spiders Spread Across U.S., Experts Advise Calm Despite Size
The Joro spider, an invasive species originally from Asia, has been spreading across the United States, including recent sightings in California. These spiders, which can grow to the size of a human palm, have been present in the U.S. since 2014, first appearing in Georgia. Despite their intimidating size and large webs, experts like Pat Wooden from Virginia Tech assure the public that these spiders are not dangerous to humans or pets. The Joro spider's presence is notable for its ability to control pest populations by preying on insects such as mosquitoes and stink bugs. The spiders disperse by 'ballooning', a process where they release silk to catch the wind, allowing them to travel significant distances.
