Governors Advocate for National Guidance on Numeracy Skills for Young Children
Six Democratic governors have called on major health organizations to issue guidance encouraging parents to engage their young children in numeracy-enriching activities at home. This initiative aims to parallel existing recommendations for early literacy, which emphasize reading, talking, and singing with children from birth. The governors, including Daniel McKee of Rhode Island and Wes Moore of Maryland, have petitioned the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Surgeon General's office to recommend a specific weekly amount of numeracy play. The Collaborative for Student Success, a nonprofit advocacy group, is leading this effort as part of its 'We’re All Solvers' campaign to improve math achievement. The petition highlights the importance of integrating numeracy into daily routines, such as sorting toys or playing number-based games, to enhance children's comfort and skills with math.
