Democratic-Led States Challenge President Trump's Tariffs in Court
Twenty-five U.S. states, predominantly led by Democrats, have filed a lawsuit against President Trump's administration, challenging the legality of new global tariffs imposed in July. The states argue that the tariffs, enacted under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, were implemented without proper authority and are seeking to halt their enforcement, declare them unlawful, and obtain refunds. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, claims that the tariff investigations were prejudged and used as a pretext to exert excessive tariff power. The tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, affect imports from 60 trading partners and have been criticized for their impact on businesses and consumers.
