RMIT University Develops Magnetic Material for Microplastic and PFAS Removal from Water
Researchers at RMIT University have developed a new water treatment material capable of rapidly removing micro- and nanoplastics, as well as some PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), from water systems. This innovation builds on a previous breakthrough in 2022, extending its effectiveness to smaller particles and more complex wastewater. The material demonstrated the ability to remove over 95% of micro- and nanoplastics, including particles as small as 30 nanometers, within an hour during lab tests. It also effectively removed various contaminants such as mercury, chromium, copper, dyes, and ibuprofen. The material's performance was consistent across different types of plastics and in both fresh and saline water. A prototype system combining the adsorbent with magnetic separation technology showed promise for practical use, allowing for quick recovery and reuse of the material.
