Chinese Military Court Issues Suspended Death Sentences to Former Defense Ministers for Bribery
A Chinese military court has sentenced two former defense ministers, Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu, to suspended death sentences for bribery. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, Wei was found guilty of accepting bribes, while Li was guilty of both accepting and offering bribes. These sentences are part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has been used to consolidate political loyalty and control among China's elite. The campaign has led to the removal of several high-ranking officials, including the highest-ranking general in January. Both Wei and Li were expelled from the Communist Party in 2024, sealing their fates. Li, who had faced U.S. sanctions over military purchases from Russia, was removed from office in October 2023.
