The investigation, led by the state attorney general, was prompted by the death of Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a detainee who reportedly did not receive adequate medical care. The facility, operated by GEO Group, has been criticized for unsanitary conditions and inadequate medical services. Protests have been ongoing, with notable arrests including U.S. Representative LaMonica McIver and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who claim their arrests were politically motivated.
