Organic Farming Practices Gain Traction Amid Rising Concerns Over Pesticide Use
Organic farming is gaining attention as a sustainable agricultural practice due to increasing concerns over the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. According to Kathleen Merrigan, Executive Director of the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems at Arizona State University, there is a growing interest in organic farming as consumers become more aware of the environmental and health impacts of conventional agriculture. Organic farming emphasizes maintaining healthy soils, supporting ecological balance, and conserving biodiversity through cultural, biological, and mechanical practices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Organic Program sets standards for organic certification, requiring crops to be grown on land free of prohibited substances for at least three years. Organic practices include crop rotation, cover cropping, and biological pest management, while prohibiting genetic engineering and synthetic growth hormones.
