Extreme Heat Wave Sweeps Across Central and Southern U.S.
A dangerous heat wave is impacting large portions of the United States, with extreme heat warnings and advisories in effect across multiple states. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a broad upper ridge centered over the central and southern U.S. is driving widespread high temperatures. Afternoon highs are expected to range from the upper 90s to low 100s (35-40°C), with isolated areas in the Desert Southwest reaching 115-120°F (46-49°C). Overnight lows are also unusually high, staying in the 70s (21-26°C). The heat wave is expected to persist into early next week, with the most severe conditions concentrated in the southern Rockies, southern Plains, and the Southeast by Tuesday. Relief is anticipated for northern areas as thunderstorms and a cold front move into the Midwest. (Source: USA Today, 2026-07-27, 12:51 PM ET)
