Frijoles Fire Support Crew Member Dies Following Medical Emergency in Santa Fe County

A support crew member assigned to the Frijoles Fire in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, died after experiencing a medical emergency on August 23. Despite life-saving efforts by medical responders, the crew member did not survive, according to California Interagency Incident Management Team 8. Incident Commander Mike Page expressed condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with the family, friends, coworkers and all those affected by this tragic loss. Every person supporting the Frijoles Fire is an important part of our team. We are grieving alongside our fire family and will do everything we can to support those impacted.” Officials have not released the identity of the crew member or provided additional details regarding the medical emergency. The incident management team has requested privacy for the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.

Unlike a previous Wyoming solar farm that displaced pronghorn, this New Mexico facility, the San Juan Solar and Storage Project, features nine individually fenced arrays with open passages between them. Researchers from Wildlands Network, supported by a $1.7 million Department of Energy grant, fitted 75 female pronghorn with GPS collars to monitor their movements. Since March 2024, over 1 million GPS locations and 5 million trail camera photos have shown that pronghorn are actively using these passages, navigating the industrial site like a maze. This behavior contrasts sharply with the Wyoming Sweetwater facility, where a single continuous fence led to pronghorn avoidance extending almost a mile beyond the fence line. The New Mexico passages were not designed for wildlife but resulted from property lines and drainage, inadvertently benefiting the animals.
