AlUla Storytellers Bring Ancient Saudi Heritage to U.S. Audience at Smithsonian
The Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art (NMAA) is hosting a unique residency featuring storytellers from AlUla, an ancient desert oasis in northwest Saudi Arabia. From August 7 to 8, cultural interpreters Atif Albalawi and Wedad Yaseen will lead immersive programs that highlight the rich history and traditions of AlUla, often referred to as the world's largest living museum. This initiative, part of a collaboration with UNESCO, aims to engage visitors through 'Qissa bi Qissa' or 'Swap a Story', a participatory storytelling experience. The residency includes public talks and interactive sessions that explore AlUla's historical significance along the ancient Incense Road, a major trade route. This event is part of a broader effort to connect American audiences with Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage.
