Biohub Secures $1.8 Billion for 'Virtual Biology' Initiative to Accelerate Scientific Discovery
Biohub, a non-profit research organization founded by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, has secured $1.8 billion in funding for its 'Virtual Biology' initiative. This AI-powered open-source platform aims to create a 'world model' of biology to serve as a discovery engine for protein structure prediction, design, and broader biological insights. The substantial investment comes from a consortium of major entities, including the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Meta, Google DeepMind, and Isomorphic Labs. The funding is not solely cash; a significant portion comprises data, computational resources, and advanced measurement technology. Launched in April with initial funding of $500 million, the initiative seeks to enable scientists to conduct experiments digitally, thereby accelerating scientific discovery and understanding of diseases.
