Historic Cullman Building Destroyed in Fire, Leaving Community in Mourning
A historic mercantile building in downtown Cullman, Alabama, dating back to the 1890s, was destroyed by fire on Monday. The Stiefelmeyer building, known for its timber-frame construction and Italianate Revival style, caught fire early in the morning, prompting a response from firefighters who battled the blaze throughout the day. The building housed approximately 15 businesses, including Aimee’s Aesthetics, ShaMor Skin, Cullman Quick Copy, and Realty South. The loss of the building, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has left business owners, government officials, and history enthusiasts mourning. The building was a significant part of Cullman's history, serving as a major mercantile business until its closure in 1983.
