Daviess County Fire Department Hosts Czech Firefighters for Active-Shooter Response Training
Firefighters from Olomouc, Czech Republic, recently observed an active-shooter exercise in Daviess County, Kentucky. This visit marks the culmination of a two-year firefighter exchange program between Owensboro, Kentucky, and its sister city, Olomouc. The Czech delegation, comprising both volunteer and career firefighters, witnessed a model of active-shooter response where sheriff's deputies and firefighter-paramedics enter a scene together while a threat is still active. This approach contrasts with the Czech system, where police enter first, and firefighters and medical services wait until the area is secured. Lenka Grässleová, head of the Department of Civil Protection and Incident Planning for Olomouc, highlighted the difference, noting that Czech firefighters are not paramedics, and their emergency services operate as separate entities.
