Oklahoma Faces Teacher Shortage as Emergency Certifications Rise
Oklahoma is experiencing a significant decline in traditionally trained teachers entering the classroom, with a 40% drop in graduates from teacher preparation programs since 2013. This has led to an increased reliance on emergency certified teachers, who now make up a substantial portion of the state's teaching workforce. Emergency certifications, once a rare measure, have become common, with 3,928 issued for the 2025-26 school year and 1,392 more approved for 2026-27. The Oklahoma State Board of Education is scrutinizing this trend, as emergency certified teachers often lack traditional classroom training. State leaders are exploring solutions to address this issue, including initiatives like TeachForward, which helps emergency certified educators earn standard certification.
