Russia Utilizes Western Digital Platforms to Recruit Foreigners for War Against Ukraine
Russia has established a large-scale online network that leverages Western digital platforms, servers, and technological infrastructure to recruit foreign nationals from Africa, Asia, and Belarus to fight in the war against Ukraine. An investigation by Code for Africa, provided to journalists by Politico, reveals that this recruitment network uses technologies from Meta and Google to identify potential recruits and assess campaign effectiveness. The primary target audience consists of workers in the world’s poorest labor markets. Recruiters use deceptive advertisements, often disguised as job offers in construction, security, or even movie roles, sometimes featuring logos of Western media outlets like the BBC to create a false sense of legitimacy.
