US Army Adopts Microgrid Technology for Battlefield Energy Efficiency
The U.S. Army is deploying a new microgrid system, Amphora, developed by Chariot Defense, under a $7.6 million contract from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). This system is designed to capture energy from various sources, including tactical generators, idling vehicles, wall sockets, and the environment, to power modern battlefield equipment. The initiative aims to replace traditional diesel generators, which are often oversized, inefficient, and create detectable noise and heat signatures that can compromise troop positions. Amphora is a compact, storage-enabled microgrid that optimizes power distribution for drones, electronic warfare kits, and edge AI compute networks. The system is resource-agnostic, meaning it can integrate diverse energy inputs, with solar power being a significant, though often unstated, component. This move is part of a broader effort by the Department of Defense to enhance energy resilience and reduce logistical vulnerabilities associated with fuel convoys.
