DOD-Backed Program Promotes Manufacturing Careers to Strengthen U.S. Defense
The Department of Defense (DOD) is supporting a workforce development initiative through LIFT, a nonprofit based in Detroit, to bolster manufacturing careers in the U.S. The program, known as Operation Next, aims to provide rapid credentialing in high-demand fields such as welding, machining, and robotics. Initially piloted at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the program has expanded to include military families, veterans, and civilians. Recently, a collaboration with Southeastern Community College resulted in 40 adult learners receiving industry-recognized certifications. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the Defense Industrial Base and address the shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing sector.
