Hundreds Oppose Bitterroot Mining Project, Citing Environmental and Economic Risks
Over 500 people attended a meeting in Hamilton, Montana, to oppose the Sheep Creek Rare Earth Exploration Project, proposed by U.S. Critical Materials near the headwaters of the West Fork of the Bitterroot River. The project, currently under review by the Bitterroot National Forest, seeks rare earth elements deemed crucial for national security. Community leaders and environmental advocates urged attendees to submit comments during the ongoing 30-day public comment period, criticizing the project's potential impacts. Concerns raised include risks to public health, water quality, and wildlife, as well as the potential negative effects on the Bitterroot’s economy, which heavily relies on tourism, recreation, and agriculture. Ravalli County Commissioners have also expressed opposition, sending letters to Montana’s federal delegation and the Forest Service.
