Researchers have successfully used artificial intelligence to design synthetic viral genomes capable of infecting bacteria, marking a significant advancement in the field of synthetic genomics. This development, detailed in the journal Science, represents the first instance of a generative design being applied to the entire genome of a bacteriophage, a type of virus that targets bacteria. The AI algorithm, known as a genome language model, was employed to create these synthetic viruses, which could potentially be used to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, the ability to generate new viral genomes also raises critical biosecurity and biosafety concerns. The researchers, led by Samuel King from Stanford University, emphasize the need for comprehensive governance and policy discussions to address potential misuse and ensure safe application of this technology.
