France, Italy, and Belgium Confront Prison Heatwave Crisis Amid Overcrowding
France, Italy, and Belgium are facing a crisis in their prison systems as severe summer heat exacerbates conditions in overcrowded and aging facilities. Inmates in these countries are struggling with high temperatures, often in cells lacking adequate ventilation and cooling systems. France's prison occupancy rate was 141.3% as of July, with inmates enduring temperatures over 37°C. Similar challenges are present in Italy and Belgium, where prison occupancy rates are also high. The heatwave has led to increased tensions, health risks, and complaints from inmates. Authorities in these countries are taking measures such as providing additional water, showers, and fans, but the fundamental issues of overcrowding and outdated infrastructure remain significant challenges.
