U.S. Representatives Reintroduce Bill to Restore FTC's Consumer Protection Authority
U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, alongside Representatives Yvette Clarke and Rob Menendez, has reintroduced the Consumer Protection and Recovery Act. This legislation aims to restore the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) authority under Section 13(b) to return money to consumers harmed by fraud and scams. The Supreme Court had previously stripped this authority in 2021, which had been a critical tool for the FTC to secure billions in relief for consumers over four decades. The bill seeks to clarify the FTC's ability to pursue monetary relief, including refunds and restitution, for consumers affected by illegal conduct. The act had previously passed the House with bipartisan support, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of consumer protection.
